Description
Under his familiar ‘Wipe The Needle’ alias, Lee Gomez has notched up countless collaborations over the last 20 years, choosing to work with both genuine legends (Josh Milan, Kenny Bobien) and rising stars of the dance music’s soulful underground. On this occasion with New Orleans-raised and France-based ‘Venuz Beats’.
On their first Good Vibrations Music outing, which follows headline-grabbing appearances on Makin’ Moves and Boogie Café, the duo gleefully details the depth and breadth of their soul-rooted dancefloor vision – a sonic blueprint rich in jazz-funk style synths, dreamy female vocalisations, classy instrument solos and infectious broken beats.
This rapidly developing signature sound comes to the fore on ‘Glory’ and ‘Never Simple Like It Was’, where jazz style piano and flute solos spar with fizzing synth motifs, but can also be heard on the deeper, more groove-driven title track and inspired closing cut ‘Manslaughter’, a thrilling, loose-limbed jungle-jazz outing topped off by stabbing sub-bass and nostalgic soundman bleeps. It provides a breathlessly brilliant conclusion to a stunning, jazz-dance friendly EP.
