Release artwork for Heaven part 1

Just under two decades since he first joined forces with Marlon D to turn Kem’s 2005 R&B classic ‘Heaven’ into a percussion-rich house gem, Sheffield soulful house don Groove Assassin has partnered with friend and regular collaborator Sean McCabe and storied vocalist Colonel Red to deliver new versions of the timeless soul song.

Description

Inspired by the success of Groove Assassin’s recent mash-up of Kem’s vocals and a McCabe instrumental, the pair headed into the studio to create their own dancefloor-focused versions of the American artist’s much-loved original.

Part one of the two-part package focuses on the duo’s heartfelt, club-ready tribute to the 2005 original. With Groove Assassin on the beats, McCabe on keys and Colonel Red providing a slick effortlessly soulful lead vocal, the pair’s ‘Classic Mix’ re-imagines the song as a warming, musically detailed delight rich in smooth bass guitar (courtesy of Bristolian musician Will Rogers) and jazzy lead guitar (provided by South African hero Shamrock).

Accompanied by a more stripped-back, groove-based dub showcasing more of the collective’s fantastic instrumentation and choice snippets of Colonel Red’s awe-inspiring vocals, ‘Heaven’ is a superb re-make of one of the 21st century’s most beloved soul jams.
